Today is shaping up to be a fantastic day! Not only is it my brother's birthday (go buy his album INCA now!!) but it is the date for Boulder Beta, and there is a local show (no surprise there) in BOULDER! (Gasp!) What is Boulder Beta? I am glad you asked. This is an event that was started by Tim Falls in February of this year. Boulder Beta is a mix of startups in the area showcasing their ideas/products/etc in a casual, social atmosphere where they can gain real, honest feedback. It is also a great place to network, see old friends, make new ones and, of ...
New Music: INCA
Starting this review out with full disclosure: Yes, this is my brother's newest gig. That is where the bias ends. I love these songs and would whether or not we were related. As of this morning, you can hear Inca, the new collaboration between Stefan Runstrom and Joey Barba, featuring vocals by Randy Ramirez. These two songs were recorded at Colorado Sound before Stefan moved out to Chicago (no, I am not bitter...at all). One of my favorite parts of the song Eye of the Storm is about 3 minutes in. This is when you can feel the music start to swirl around you as it ...
WTAF?
I really do not know what just happened to my ears. Gotta hand it to Jack White, he sure does know how to pick his collaborations. Insane Clown Posse - Leck Mich Im Arsch by Third Man Records Now to go listen to something more upbeat (say Koo Koo Kanga Roo maybe?) And to get the ICP visuals out of your head, here is video from when Koo Koo Kanga Roo came through Denver:
New Goal For The Summer (Thanks Aimee)
I have been thinking about this for awhile now (and actively trying to achieve this new goal), but I have decided that I need to take more photos and video of my life. I know what you are thinking. You are thinking "But, Monika, you have over 350 videos on YouTube, countless photos on Flickr and always have a camera in your massive purse!" Yes, this may be true, however, how many of those photos feature me with my friends, just hanging out and having a good time? Not very many. The only photos of myself are the vanity Instagram pics that end up being my ...
Fork Me
It is no secret that I will sign up for any new service and download most new apps, but most of them are gone from my iPhone and my memory within a few days (some within hours). Even more rare is the app that I find myself using almost immediately on a daily basis. Forkly is one of those apps. I was lucky enough to be a beta tester for them, but when I updated my iOS to beta 5 it borked my ability to use Forkly. That is when I knew that they were on to something. I was so annoyed that I couldn't fork my food ...
Bohemian Nights at New West Fest 2011
Tomorrow is the start of the 2011 Bohemian Nights music festival at New West Fest in Fort Collins. Since I grew up in Fort Collins, I have been dragged to my fair share of New West Fests, but I must say, they are getting increasingly better with each year. The main focus of New West Fest used to be arts and crafts, and while many vendors still have booths and sell their art, the focus has changed and is now more music related. A few years ago the Bohemian Foundation came in and funded the music for the whole weekend and has been growing the festival ...
My latest musical obsession: Scattered Trees
Currently Obsessed with Scattered Trees thanks to Petals of Spain. They posted this video earlier, and I fell in love with both the video and the song. Then I started listening to the whole album and have had this song on repeat for the better part of an hour. Something about the drums and the tambourine in this song just have me mesmerized (yes, it is quite possible that my medication has something to do with this obsession, I still stand by my obsession though).
Ludo Returns to Denver!
So excited to see Ludo play the Marquis tonight! Here is the acoustic version of Love Me Dead from the last time they came to Denver in October: Their CD's remind me of a rock opera. The songs also remind me of Dracula's Lament from Forgetting Sarah Marshall: Hopefully I will get more video from their show tonight!
Latest Music Obsession: Paper Wolves
This latest band comes to you all the way from Australia! (Look at me branching out beyond my Denver roots :p) Ok, so while this band is from Australia, I have to fess up, I was introduced to them through a local band. Three years ago, Paper Wolves member, Mike Horbacz was in the band The Mile After and they toured with my brother's band, Tickle Me Pink. For my birthday that year, my parents gave me a trip out to California to see TMP play in Pomona and at the House Of Blues in LA. I fell in LOVE with The Mile After in Cali and ...
My *Tentative* UMS Schedule
The 11th annual Underground Music Showcase is this week! I have never been to this festival before, but I am excited to be going this year. Below is my first draft of my schedule (yes, I realize there are some overlapping times, but this is my first draft and it is mainly a list of bands I want to see). Making this list was hard work! There are over 325 bands playing 25 different venues, and of course, a lot of the bands I want to see are playing at the same time. Many of the bands below I have seen play multiple shows, so I am ...
