...with ear plugs My love affair with ear plugs started innocently enough. While at a concert during SXSWi I realized I had received some free ear plugs that were conveniently located in the humongous purse that is permanently attached to my shoulder. After minutes of digging in my purse to find them, I finally located them. Eventually I was able to get them into my ears, and I was in heaven! Considering I generally find myself next to the speaker (always on the right side too) the ear plugs gave my ears a much needed break from the show. For the rest of my time at ...

Westword Music Showcase 2011 Ballot
Time to vote for the best bands in Colorado via the Westword! There are 49 categories ranging from Pop to Rock-Psych Rock/Shoegaze. I already have my picks for some of the categories, but still need help picking the other ones. The toughest category for me was Pop-Traditional because every band in that category is amazing: Boys, Della, The Heyday, The Northern Way and Regret Night. It doesn't get much better than that! So here are my picks: Pop-Traditonal: The Heyday Pop-Alternative: My Body Sings Electric Rock-Traditional: The Foot. Rock-Alternative: The Knew Rock-Indie: Fierce Bad Rabbit Rock-Roots: Arliss Nancy Hip-Hop-Band: Air Dubai Punk: Reno Divorce Post-Punk: Wire Faces Americana: Paper Bird Folk/Acoustic: Churchill Funk: Bop Skizzum (more…)
Music Monday – ‘Beauty Queen’ by Bop Skizzum
Time for some more local music! My latest song on repeat comes from veterans Bop Skizzum. They have been around for over 10 years, but are still just as rocking as ever. They describe themselves as 'funk, soul and some rock and roll.' I went to college with Andy ROK Guerrero at CU Denver and am happy that Bop Skizzum is still kicking it. They are playing a show in Boulder, at the Fox Theater tomorrow night, April 19th, which is exciting, since we all know my thoughts on the local Boulder music scene. Enjoy Beauty Queen below, and consider joining me for their show tomorrow! Beauty ...
Upcoming Concerts That I Am Attending And So Should You
Now that FoCoMX is over, I am already planning out the rest of my month with as many concerts as I can. There are 2 festivals that are coming up in April that have great lineups and are both for good causes. The first is Mountain of Arms, which will be a big festival that takes place at City Hall in Denver and features 25+ bands, playing 3 stages on April 23rd. Best part? Tickets are only $12 AND all proceeds benefit Japan. (more…)
Taking Back Sunday – El Paso
Earlier today I stumbled on this video. Not only do I love that Taking Back Sunday has a new CD coming out in June, but the way the video incorporates both tweets from fans and lyrics of the song makes it fun to watch. Hope you enjoy: You'll Never Give What You Get
Local Band of the Week: Churchill
It is no secret that I love local music, and luckily we live in a great area that is full of amazing bands. This week the local band on repeat for me is Churchill. I have seen them a few times in Denver and they will be playing at the Brick House (connected to the Lazy Dog) in Boulder on Thursday night, April, 14th. Opening for them is another great act, Sam Lee. Tickets are only $5, so there really is no reason for you not to join me. Here is an acoustic song/video of Churchill (and how adorable is Bethany playing the accordion? She has ...
Notes From the FoCoMX Panel on Booking
One of the education panels at this years FoCoMX was on how to book a show. The panelists covered best practices, band etiquette and took many questions from the eager audience. Below are the notes I took while I was attending. I know it bounces around a lot, but there is some great advice in here for bands. Enjoy!
All Liver No Onions – FoCoMX
While waiting for the green room to open at FoCoMX on Saturday, I met my friend Rande at Hodi's Half Note. Playing was All Liver No Onions, who were fantastic! The lead singer, Mia, was adorable, and wrote this song all by herself! The story of how they got their name is also pretty cute: "One day in the depths of the sea, a dolphin named Salli tried to eat an onion, she didn't enjoy it much, and cried a bit. This ordeal made her so sad she decided to move to the land. She ended up in Colorado and met a boy named Oliver, They fell ...
Foo-ed Up Documentary
So after all of my raving about how amazing the Foo Fighters documentary was, my parents got tickets to one of 2 theaters in Colorado that were showing the movie. They were so excited! I couldn't wait to hear what they thought of the movie and the 3D live concert. After the movie, I texted my mom to ask how it was. She said it was torture, the sound was really messed up and the 3D did not work. I assumed she was just talking about the 3D live concert, so I called her to see how the documentary was. Turns out the whole movie was messed up. ...
