This weekend I was in Fort Collins visiting with my family (and meeting my brother’s adorable new puppy, Drake) when my parents and I decided to go see the new movie The Kids Are All Right.
I had no expectations to this movie whatsoever and barely remember seeing the trailer:
The movie was a bit more shocking than the trailer would have you thinking. First of all there was just so much sex! The trailer makes the movie seem very light hearted and comical, but the actual movie was emotional, serious and sexual (seriously – there was a LOT of sex).
The Kids Are All Right was also full of awkward moments which kept me kind of tense and a left me feeling a little bit uncomfortable. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore’s acting towards each other also left much to be desired. It was not until the last part of the movie (like 20 minutes or so) that you started to believe that they were actually a lesbian couple.
While they may not have made the best lesbian couple, whoever cast Josh Hutcherson was definitely doing their job. You believed that he truly could be the son of Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo with both his looks and mannerisms.
I would not tell people to not go see this movie, but I would definitely warn them that this is not necessaribly the up-lifting comedy they were expecting and that they should not be squeemish of sex scenes (especially when the demographics of the audience were older couples – which was also a bit shocking).
All in all I am glad I saw The Kids Are All Right, but really wish the trailer did a better job of depicting this movie.
